Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
